Fortress Everdingen

Fort Everdingen is part of the New Dutch Waterline and named after the neighboring village of Everdingen. Together with Fort Honswijk, the fort forms the Lek access.

The tower fort was built between 1842 and 1847 on the spot where the Lekdijk and Diefdijk rivers meet. In 1874, the tower fort was radically modified. The top floor was demolished and the vulnerable front side was largely surrounded by a countercarp gallery. This is a metre-thick earthen wall with a two-storey brick gallery at its base. This provided extra space for the stationing of soldiers and the storage of equipment. There was also a poterne, which the men used to reach the front wall directly. In 1877 two ground-covered buildings, buildings A and B, were completed. These have three floors and on the top floor guns were stored and on the bottom floor the ammunition was stored. Three years later, a fort keeper's house was completed.
