The Elsterberg, at 62.5 meters high, along with the Amerongse Berg (69 m) and the Galgenberg (50 m), is one of the highest peaks of the Utrecht Ridge. The mountains were formed during the ice age when a large glacier pushed layers of sand southward. As it got warmer, the glacier melted and the water sought its way to the edges of the hill ridge. The water eroded deep valleys in the underlying soil, creating the meltwater valleys. The Elsterberg and the Amerongse Berg have become quite high by Dutch standards because the hill ridge was pushed up again by a subsequent glacier.
