The oldest part of Maastricht, approximately where the Roman Castellum was located. In the 19th century, this was an upscale neighborhood. After the wealthy residents left, decline followed. The regeneration of the area started in 1955. Many residents were housed in 'living schools', special accommodations for antisocials. The Stokstraat quarter is now a pricey neighborhood again.
