A trip through the Kievitsbuurt is a unique experience. Beautiful recreational homes can be found everywhere on little islands. These islands are old turf fields, remnants of peat extraction. On these strips of land, the peat was laid out to dry. Over time, the turf fields were eroded by strong winds, creating an open water area, the ponds. At the edges of the ponds, like here in the Kievitsbuurt, the turf fields have been preserved. Everywhere, revetments have been installed to prevent further erosion.
