Old Palace Lofen/ Bar Walden

Description

Palace Lofen
In Bar-Restaurant Walen, the remnants of the old Palace Lofen can be found, and it has a special history.

At the end of the tenth century, Utrecht was a powerful diocese. The city had the thriving trading center of Stathe (comparable to the current municipality of Utrecht) and the extensive power of the bishop, which stretched from Groningen to Tiel. It was part of Frankish territory. The bishop's great power and his promise of celibacy suited the Frankish king well: no descendants meant free rein in appointing a new bishop. Of course, support for these candidates from the king was an advantage. This cooperation ensured that the king spent much time in Utrecht. The bishop was the host, and the king stayed with his retinue within the episcopal buildings. Around 1040, a small palace was built for this purpose, later known as Palace Lofen. It was frequently occupied. Many great lords, bishops, counts, and dukes made their appearance here to discuss important matters with the king. Armed expeditions were also undertaken from here.
However, in 1122, a party at Palace Lofen got out of hand: Emperor Henry stayed with his fiancée during Easter at the bishop's residence. Suddenly, fighting broke out between the bishop's ministerials and the members of the imperial guard. Imperial chronicler Ekkehard recounts: ‘Confused battle cries were heard, as if the Utrecht residents had contrived a conspiracy against the emperor. Many fell. The bishop was also put under guard as an accomplice to the base attack and on charges of majesty offense.’ Unfortunately, he says nothing about the causes of the quarrel. Bail was paid for the bishop, but other rebels could not escape their punishment.
The fire that nearly completely reduced Utrecht to ashes in 1253 spared Palace Lofen for unknown reasons. Later building plans resulted in only its impressive cellar remaining. Unfortunately, as it must have been an impressive and elegant building, with a row of pillars and a large balcony. It owes its name Lofen (loggia), which means pillars.
