Main Square

The Grote Markt, Grootemarkt or Kruismarkt is the large square in the center of the Dutch city of Nijmegen. Throughout history, the square has been known by many names, including Cruys and Cruys Marct, presumably derived from a cross that once stood there as a symbol of market rights. On July 9, 1924, the municipal council officially named it "Groote Markt." During World War II, the southern side of the square was heavily affected by the bombing of Nijmegen. The pre-war buildings on the northern side of the square have thus been well preserved, while the buildings on the southern side are entirely post-war.
