Chapel in the Sand

For centuries, people from near and far have come to the Roermond Chapel in 't Zand to pray to Our Lady. In the twentieth century, many people from home and abroad traveled to Roermond to find contemplation in this special church, including organized pilgrimages.
The chapel is still very busy during the pilgrimage season, from the first weekend in May to mid-September. What makes this pilgrimage church so special? The Chapel in 't Zand owes its appeal to the veneration of Mary, which dates back hundreds of years, to 1418, when a Polish shepherd found a statue of Mary there.
Subsequently, many miraculous events occurred, which are still remembered today. The well in which the shepherd found the statue can be seen at the Mary chapel in the church. Many people visited the chapel, usually to lay down their worries at the feet of Mary, to ask their questions, and to seek assistance in their lives or to thank Mary for granted favors.
The many tiles in the procession walk next to the church, where the chapel is also located, testify to all of this. Due to its unique character, the procession path has not only a religious significance but also cultural and historical value. It is no coincidence that this place for contemplation is protected as a national monument.
