Castle De Keverberg is a consolidated ruin of a motte castle (a motte is an artificially constructed earthen mound). The castle is located on a raised hill, directly on the Meuse, making it one of the few remaining motte castles in the Netherlands.
During the Second World War, the castle was occupied by German soldiers, who blew it up and set it on fire when they retreated. The interior walls were completely destroyed and the resulting fire left nothing intact of the interior. This is how Kessel Castle became a ruin.
The Foundation for the Preservation of De Keverberg Castle is the owner of the ruin and has raised five million euros for the preservation of De Keverberg. Apart from the old walls, a new part has been built, consisting of slender columns on which concrete floors and the roof rest. The new roof is covered with slates and has been shaped like the 18th-century roof. Instead of the original small dormer windows, large glass windows have been installed. There are glass fronts between the columns. The courtyard was given a gently sloping glass roof.
