Nationally protected view of Orvelte

View Orvelte is a state-protected townscape in Orvelte in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The designation procedure was initiated on December 7, 1964. The area was definitively designated on August 7, 1967. The protected area covers an area of 34.4 hectares. Buildings that fall within a protected area do not automatically receive the status of protected monuments. However, the municipality will amend the zoning plan to regulate new developments in the area. Face protection focuses on the urban planning and cultural-historical appreciation of an area and aims to safeguard its future functioning.

There are two explanations of the name Orvelte. One is that in the vicinity of Orvelte 'orre' or iron ore was mined. According to the other explanation, farmers from Zweeloo were looking for a new area to settle. For them, that was 'oer 't veld' (over the field) and Orvelte would be a corruption of that.

This is the oldest farm in the municipality of Midden Drenthe and has been located in the village of Orvelte since the late 60s. The farm was probably built between 1560 and 1650 and stood in Bruntinge until the move to Orvelte. In the first half of the 18th century, the farm was extended with a hay barn and sheepfold and the living area was extended. At the moment the Bruntingerhof is closed due to a renovation. The farm can be visited from the outside.
