The Arch of the Soul is a lock with a bridge that was constructed around 1725 by Antoni Verburgh, city architect of the city of Groningen, in Termunterzijl on the Dollard in the northeastern part of the province of Groningen.
In 1724, the city architect of the city of Groningen, Antoni Verburgh, was commissioned to create a new lock in Termunterzijl to replace the old lock from 1601 in the Termunterzijldiep. The new lock was necessary because the old lock was destroyed during the St. Martin's flood in 1686. The accompanying bridge had a natural stone parapet on which the names and coats of arms were placed of the local administrators, the city of Groningen, Oldambt, and the architect himself.
