The medieval village of IJzendijke disappeared around 1400 due to storm floods. About 2 km to the southwest, a hamlet then emerged at a higher point in the flooded area. In 1587, a fortification was built here on the orders of the Spanish commander Alexander Farnese, the Duke of Parma. Slightly to the west, the Spaniards also built the redoubt Boerenverdriet.
