In Glane, near the German border, war broke out on February 15, 1945. At about 2 p.m., about 35 bombs were dropped by British or American aircraft. The bombs must have been destined for Gronau, which was bombed several times during World War II. The people of Glane lived near the border, within walking distance of the textile factories that were located on Losserstraße in Gronau. Now there is also a new neighbourhood where many Dutch people live.
Three people were killed (Johanna Koertshuis, Bernard Boerrigter and H. Verbeek) and eight were (seriously) injured in the bombing. Several houses in the neighborhood were severely damaged, of which about twenty-five were completely uninhabitable.
Most of the damage occurred on the Glanergrensweg, near the Gronausestraat and on the Hoge Veldweg. The houses in this last place were not rebuilt. In the spring, when the field is plowed, debris still appears.
