The Jewish Zilversmit family here a butcher shop on the corner of Brinkstraat and Schuurkerkstraat. First on the corner on the other side. Later on the corner where Intertoys is now located. Already in the beginning of the 19th century, people with the name Zilversmit lived in Losser. One of them was already a butcher by profession. The butcher's shop on this site was built by Moses Zilversmit (1883-1934). He was called 'Moses 'a butcher'. His son Herman (born 30-11-1915) continued the business and the other son Siegfried (born 02-11-1914) worked at a bakery in Enschede. When the Second World War broke out, the old Mrs. Hanchen Zilversmit-Katz (born 19-12-1876, the widow of Moses), her son Siegfried and her son Herman with his wife Grete Zilver-smit-Hirsch (born 08-02-1920) and their daughter Elsbeth (born 16-07-1940) lived here. When Siegfried Zilversmit received a call from the Nazis in 1942 to report, he went voluntarily. He believed that you had 'the best chance of getting off well'. He was murdered on 28 February 1943 in Auschwitz.De old Mrs Zilversmit, son Herman, his wife Grete and little Elsbeth of less than 3 years old, reported to the mayor on 8 April 1943 and received a permit 'to go to camp Vught'. The old lady died on May 14, 1943 in Sobibor. Grete and her daughter were deported on 8 June 1943 with the infamous Vughttransport (3017 people) via Westerbork to Sobibor, where they were gassed on 11 June. Father Herman Zilversmit also died on 9 July 1943 in Sobibor. On July 11, 2013, 'Stolpersteine' was placed in the sidewalks near the houses where the aforementioned Jewish villagers lived. Stolpersteine are so called because you "trip over it with your head and with your heart and because you have to bend to read the text." On the (ten) stones are brass plates with the name, date of birth, date of deportation and date of death
