About 30 years after the founding of Naarden, in 1380, construction of the St. Vitus or Great Church began. They started with the tower, which would serve for centuries as a beacon for shipping on the Zuiderzee. A fire was lit on the still flat roof, making the tower literally a lighthouse. Immediately after its construction, the church proved too small. It was not only for church services but also served as the only stone building in the city as a safe haven during, for example, a fire. Residents and their livestock had to take refuge here. Cannonballs are embedded in the walls of the tower as a reminder of the many sieges of the city. If you have the chance, be sure to take a look inside the church. The wooden ceiling features unique 16th-century paintings of biblical representations. Or climb the tower for a breathtaking view over the fortress and the Gooise landscape.
