Waterways have been essential for the development of Hilversum. When 's-Graveland was constructed, a navigation channel was dug towards Hilversum. Around 1650, a harbor was established at the end of the current Vaartweg. Through this Gooise Vaart, there was a waterway to the Vecht. The navigation route was further excavated, and by the end of the 19th century, the canal had progressed to Havenstraat where the Old Harbor was created. This loading area primarily facilitated the delivery of building materials to Hilversum.
