Le vie d'acqua sono state essenziali per lo sviluppo di Hilversum. Durante la costruzione di 's-Graveland, è stato scavato un canale navigabile in direzione di Hilversum. Intorno al 1650 sorse un porto alla fine dell'attuale Vaartweg. Attraverso questo Gooise Vaart esisteva una via d'acqua verso la Vecht. Il canale navigabile fu ulteriormente scavato e alla fine del XIX secolo il canale era avanzato fino a Havenstraat, dove sorse il Vecchio Porto. Attraverso questo punto di scarico, soprattutto molti materiali da costruzione arrivarono a Hilversum.
