The villa was built in 1916 by the architect R.B. Sleumer on behalf of Harm Smedema, a farmer at Barmerheerd at Barmerweg 10 in Doodstil. Smedema was a member of the municipal council of the former municipality of Kantens from 1913, later also an alderman and from 1926 until his death in 1927 mayor of this municipality. Although the villa is also referred to as the mayor's villa, this house has never been an official residence, but has always been a private residence.
