After it had been decided not to build a connection between the inner harbour of Scheveningen (near the Badhuiskade) and the sea (it was difficult to let the bathers bathe in the polluted canal water of The Hague), it was decided to dig a new canal to discharge the water from the canals of The Hague. This "Refreshment Canal" (officially called Drainage Canal) was built in 1888.
The sluice is opened at set times at low tide (inset at the top right) and the lights are switched on (inset at the top left). At high tide, the sluice is closed (inset at the bottom right).
