The Reformed Church of Scheemda was built in 1515 after the Dutch village was moved because of the advancing Dollard. The foundations of the previous 13th-century church and tower are located near the A7 and were uncovered between 1988 and 1989. This former location of the church is known as the 'Ol Kerkhof'. The church was dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.
