The Zuidertoren was built in 1854, at the same time as the Noordertoren on the Dutch Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog. Because there were no light characters in the past, they sometimes placed two towers or fires, so that the sailor knew where he was. In addition, two fires or towers could form a line, so that ships could be guided along dangerous shoals.
