The holiday home was built in 1937 for ƒ 1763 by the contractor W. van der Geest to a design by architect Tjeerd Venstra commissioned by J.D. de Jong Lzn. from Leeuwarden.
Venstra is also the architect of, among other things, the villa Zonneheuvel in Dokkum and the Canidunum holiday home on Ameland. In his work, he was inspired by the expressionism of the Amsterdam School. When designing the Horst, he made use of its natural location in the dunes. There are elements of the English country house style in this work. The design is asymmetrical, circular shapes are punctuated by rectangular patterns. At that time, thatched roofing was prescribed by the owner of the island of Schiermonnikoog, the German Count Georg Ernst August von Bernstorff.
