The Prince Frederikkazerne is a former barracks located on the Amelandsdwinger in Leeuwarden, in the Dutch province of Friesland. The building on the east side of the city center of Leeuwarden was constructed in 1829, designed by city architect G. van der Wielen. On the evening of Thursday, June 19, 1860, the building went up in flames during a large fire. After this fire, the building was rebuilt in 1863. It is a square structure made of red and yellow brick. After Defense vacated the building, renovations began after a few years and a spectacular squatting protest in 1981. The complex now consists of 197 homes for single and double-person households, living groups, and people with disabilities. The barracks have been left as much as possible in their original state on the outside, with slightly more glass in the façade. The corridors and staircases inside have been enlivened with red and blue. The building is a national monument. The barracks are primarily inhabited by students.
