The Saint Nicholas Chapel, also known as the Valkhof Chapel or Carolingian Chapel, in Nijmegen is a chapel on the Valkhof, a hill in the center of Nijmegen that was already in use by the Batavians at the beginning of the Common Era. Charlemagne had a palace built on this hill in the eighth century, which was expanded in the centuries that followed. The current chapel dates from around 1000. The construction made use of the remains of Charlemagne's palace chapel. Due to similarities with the Aachen palace chapel, the age of the Valkhof Chapel was long overestimated; the chapel was thought to date from the eighth century, making it the oldest building in the Netherlands by far. The building was included in the national monument register in 1973.
