To the southwest of Zevenaar lies the river area De Gelderse Poort, right near the South Gelderland city of Nijmegen. It is situated on the banks of the Waal. The nature reserve is named after the place where the Rhine carves its way through a ridge formed during the Ice Age and begins to split. This is essentially the beginning of the Rhine delta. Here, the Rhine and Waal had numerous other courses. The area is characterized by a mix of broad floodplains, higher sandy knolls, and dikes with numerous breaches that left pools and whirlpools in the landscape. The watershed is blocked by the ridge of Nijmegen and to the north by the ridge of the Veluwe.
