Along this canal, flat-bottomed boats are used to remove the reeds that have been drying on the waterfront in the spring. . The reeds are tied together in small bunches and the underside of the stems are rubbed against a rough plate. This makes them smooth and suitable as roofing material. A striking number of roofs in the area are covered with the strong Weerribben reed.
