Along the Hogeweg you will come across tiny peat houses and wooden 'tjasker' water mills that ground the peat pits dry. The Tjasker watermill is a simple polder mill with a large wheel on a long diagonal screw. They were used in the peat excavations to grind the peat holes dry and still serve to maintain the groundwater level in the reed beds.
