Paul's Church

The Pauluskerk is a Protestant church in Tilburg, consecrated in 1823. It is located at Heuvelstraat 141. The Pauluskerk is classified as a national monument.
The Reformed congregation in Tilburg basically dates back to 1629, and its origin is marked by the fall of 's-Hertogenbosch. The Reformed minister Portenius from the nearby 's-Gravenmoer, which belonged to Holland, unsuccessfully tried to hold a service in the Heikese church. He found the door closed. In 1633, it succeeded the minister Petrus Arleboutius, with the help of the high bailiff and 200 horsemen, to hold a service and preach to a small number of Protestants. In the following years, the situation remained unclear, but in 1648, the church definitively came into the hands of the Reformed. The administration had to be exercised by Protestants in the Generaliteitsland, and thus people from the north came to carry out these tasks. In 1651, a church council could be established, and in 1675 there were 60 Reformed members in Tilburg, a number that increased to around 200 by the end of the 18th century. At that time, there were about 9000 Catholics living there.
