Castle of Stein

The castle of Stein is nestled between the village of Stein and the Julianakanaal. It is a moated complex consisting of a ruin of an old main castle with an outer bailey, a northern wing with an entrance gate, a western wing with a coach house, and an eastern wing.

The main castle or "Upper Castle" includes a motte-and-bailey castle on a natural elevation with a substantial marlstone keep dating from around 1200, known as the "White Tower". The so-called "Red Tower" and the well tower adjacent to it were built by Jan van Heinsberg and date back to around 1450.

The tower-shaped entrance gate in the northern wing is from the 16th century. The mansard roof on the gate dates from around 1730 when the gate was raised.

The eastern wing is a neoclassical plastered mansion of two stories dating from 1840. The western wing from around 1850 includes a similarly neoclassical coach house with projecting corner parts.

Over the centuries, the structure has seen extensions and growth, but also decay, until the ruin has organically blended into the beautiful, romantic castle park in the English landscape style.
