You have to be able to handle it, that oppressive emptiness as you walk along grassy paths and roads in the style of Piet Mondrian's late work. A stripe of land, on top of that a dot of a farm or mill on which your gaze lingers for a moment and above that insane amount of air in which cloud ships float. After a few kilometres full of cloudy landscapes, the fledgling nature reserve Ae's Woudbloem offers distraction. The area is so called because two peat streams flow close to each other: the Slochter Ae and the Scharmer Ae. Here, too, peat has been peated and the groundwater level has been raised. Sopping over grassy embankments, you know: it's all done for nature and the hiker benefits and enjoys budding willows and meadow birds.
