On 4 January 1945, a dogfight took place over the oldenzaal area. Seven Focke Wulf's had taken off from Twente Air Base. The formation was discovered by a group of Spitfires, after which a life-and-death battle broke out. One of the first victims was a Focke Wulf 190-A-8 that ended up in a meadow near the Hakenberg. The pilot jumped out of the plane but did not survive the fall.
