Castle Schaesberg

Castle Schaesberg is located between the core of Schaesberg in the municipality of Landgraaf and Heerlen in Dutch Limburg. Only the ruins of the main building remain from the castle of the lords of Schaesberg. Since 2012, the castle has been gradually rebuilt.

The water castle originated in its last intact form in the 16th and 17th centuries in the style of the Meuse Renaissance. It was one of the best and largest examples of this widely spread architectural style in present-day Dutch Limburg. The lords and later imperial counts of Schaesberg inhabited the castle until the 18th century. After the French period, the castle gradually fell more and more into disrepair. In 1965, there was a small fire in the outer bailey with its corner towers and gatehouse. Much vandalism, lack of maintenance, and the continued absence of restoration resulted in the demolition of the outer bailey in 1968. This was despite the municipal obligation for restoration. The castle had already been confiscated by the Dutch state as a German possession in 1945. From 1975 onwards, the remaining ruins of the castle were consolidated.
