On May 1, 1987, this Jewish-German philosopher and Carmelite was beatified in Cologne by Pope John Paul II and canonized on October 11, 1998. The pope characterized her as: Daughter of Israel and faithful Daughter of the Church. She entered a convent in Echt in 1938 in an attempt to escape the persecution of the Jews. In 1942, she was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Auschwitz along with her sister. Both were killed in the gas chambers. The H. Landricus Church in Echt has been elevated to a pilgrimage church in honor of Edith Stein and is visited annually by hundreds of pilgrims.
