The Plompe Toren is a prominent landmark near the Oosterscheldedijk in Burghsluis. The tower is the last remnant of the lost village of Koudekerke. When the sea swallowed the village in 1581, the city of Zierikzee took over the management and maintenance of the tower. The city had an interest in this, as the tower served as a beacon for the busy shipping traffic on the Oosterschelde. The Plompe Toren guided ships heading to Antwerp and served as an important landmark. When the Oosterschelde encroached further and washed away the entire village, only the church tower remained (before 1700). Once again, the city of Zierikzee took responsibility for the tower. In 1784, the exterior was restored, and it remained that way well into the 19th century. In 1867, it was transferred to the national government (Rijksdienst der Domeinen). In 1935, the former mayor of Noordgouwe, Jonkheer C.A. van Citters, arranged for a restoration.
