Plan a birdwatching trip

After the Flood Disaster in 1953, the Delta Works were constructed. The Oosterschelde received a storm surge barrier. This dam provided the much-needed safety but also caused damage to nature. The gradual transition between salt and fresh land was partly lost. As a result, mudflats and plates are partly submerged. Coastal birds no longer have a place to breed or search for food.

Zeeuwse plants and animals
To restore the typical Zeeuwse plants and animals, Plan Tureluur has been initiated. Especially on the southern coast of Schouwen-Duiveland, new nature reserves are being created. Water plays an important role in this. For the plants and animals living in this nature reserve, water is an important source of food. This nature development project aims to bring back the former landscape, while preserving the important dikes and the Oosterschelde barrier that protect the hinterland.

History visible
The remarkable history of this ancient land is again visible. Old creek patterns have been excavated and elevation differences have been implemented. Also, the old and partly lost cart field patterns have been restored in the inlets.

What does the new nature look like?
The nature reserve is characterized by wet grasslands with inlets and cart fields. Key players in the new nature are the saltwater intrusion and high water levels. The saltwater intrusion ensures that hundreds of plant species grow. The high water levels attract many special birds such as the redshank.
