Living below sea level is special. So how do we keep our feet dry? You are now at the Coastal Information Centre, which tells you about water management in the past, now and in the future and the reinforcement of the coast between Petten and Camperduin.
Are you climbing up? Up the dike?
You are now on top of the dike. The construction of this started in 1880. In all those years, it has been raised and widened several times. Behind the dike lies the village of Petten, which has been swallowed up by the sea many times. You can read all about it in the information centre.
In 2015, this former 'weak link' in the coastal defences was strengthened. With the help of sand, sucked up from the seabed, a beautiful beach and dune landscape has been created. This will make the coast clear for decades.
HOW TO RIDE A BIKE:
The cycle route is an adaptation of an educational route. As a result, the information has a sequence.
You cycle this route counterclockwise. To the high dune and then via the cycle path along the sea to Camperduin and then back through the hinterland through the polders.
