The twin village of Middelharnis/Sommelsdijk has a protected village. Middelharnis also has a beautiful church ring with the monumental late Gothic Kruiskerk in the middle.
The church of Middelharnis can be seen in its original state in the painting The Lane of Middelharnis by Meindert Hobbema. Meindert Lubbertszoon Hobbema (1638-1709) was a Dutch landscape painter who was born in Amsterdam. His best-known work is The Lane of Middelharnis (1689), which now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
In the second half of the 18th century, Jews settled in various villages on Goeree and Overflakkee. A thriving Jewish community also arose in Middelharnis and a synagogue was built in 1842.
From August 1942 onwards, Flakkeese Jews were deported to the extermination camps. The largest deportation took place at the beginning of November of the same year. With the exception of a handful of people in hiding, all Jewish inhabitants were deported and murdered.
