Description

In January of the following year, 1673, William III ordered the weak link in the Waterlinie at the Oude Rijn to be reinforced. Anthonie Smits was commissioned to build a strong and defensible redoubt at the Wiericke. In August 1673 the building, the current Wiericker Schans, was completed. Costs: f.89,000,-.

After 1815, the Old Dutch Waterline was replaced by the New Dutch Waterline located more to the east. Because the Wiericker Schans was not part of the New Waterline, it quickly lost its importance as a defensive structure.
Around 1828 the destination changed to a warehouse for gunpowder and ammunition. The redoubt was designated as the 'Main depot of the State gunpowder'.
