The market square is considered to be the oldest part of the city. In the 12th century, this was already an unpaved core with buildings and a few spurs of streets. When it was granted city rights in the mid-13th century, Bergen op Zoom grew into a fully-fledged city. Over the centuries, the city expanded and in the 14th century it was given a wall. Despite the fact that more squares were added, the market remained the central core of the city, partly thanks to the presence of the St. Gertrudis Church and the former town hall.
