Schiebroek Park

The Schiebroek park is an ecologically designed and managed park with various sports complexes on the northern side of Rotterdam. Extensive tree felling had to take place in the existing park; the trees had become too tall in relation to the flight path of Rotterdam Airport. The park was also expanded, adding two large sports complexes.

The total park covers approximately 80 hectares. Through an intensive participation process with local residents and action groups, a complete redesign of the park was created. The traffic access is no longer through Schiebroek but on the side of the provincial road. A new avenue provides access to the complexes for both motorized and non-motorized traffic. Every weekend, the public parks on the grass among the trees, attending the large sports events.

The new complexes are integrated into the park to create an interaction between recreational park use and sports activities. Additionally, a subtle zoning has been created with the ‘lane park’ (between the sports complexes), the 'landscape park', the 'forest park', and the 'fringe park' along the N209.

The trees near Rotterdam Airport are sustainably kept low through coppicing management. The coppices are processed into wood piles that mark the main routes in the park. The park is extensively managed with a herd of Scottish Highland cattle, and all waterways are equipped with nature-friendly banks.
