Rhijnhof Cemetery

Rhijnhof Cemetery is a cemetery in the Dutch city of Leiden, which was taken into use in 1910. Until 1966, it was part of the municipality of Oegstgeest. In the 17th century, there was a brick factory here along the Rhine, near the Haagsche Schouw, with some workers' houses. Nicolaas van Campen purchased the land in 1679 and created a country house called Dubbelhof. One of the subsequent owners, Willem Mylius, a doctor in Leiden, decided in 1730 to construct what would then be named the country house Rhijnhof. In 1775, the then owner Hendrik Sandijk, a merchant from Amsterdam, ensured the renovation that gave the house its current neoclassical appearance. The design came from the Amsterdam city architect Johan Samuel Creutz, after possibly also involving a predecessor, Cornelis Rauws, in the plans earlier.
