This is a place you can't reach without a boat. There's quite a bit to tell about the history: for example, that the Warmonders created a large polder there in 1650, more than twice the size it is now. And that in the late sixties half of the polder disappeared due to sand extraction for the Schiphollijn and the construction of the Leidse Merenwijk. This is how Joppe was formed, the largest and deepest lake of the Kaag, which we are now walking alongside.
History aside, the Zwanburgerpolder is mainly a special place to be alone. At quiet moments, you are the only passenger on De heere Schouten and then you find yourself alone in the midst of green nature. Among the swans and geese but also various meadow birds. Last year, sixteen bird species were spotted. After walking one and a half kilometers - with a short stop at the lookout point - you are greeted at the second jetty by the curious young cattle from farm De Eenzaamheid and the crew of the foot ferry.
