Van Bergen IJzendoornpark

The Van Bergen IJzendoornpark is an urban park, located between the Stationsplein, Crabethstraat, Van Beverninghlaan, and Nieuwe Gouwe O.Z. in the Dutch city of Gouda.
The park is named after its benefactor, the Gouda mayor Albertus Adrianus van Bergen IJzendoorn. He left ƒ 40,000 to the municipality of Gouda upon his death in 1895. The amount was intended to create a walking park just outside the then city limits. He also stipulated that the park should be accessible from multiple sides. Van Dolder de Wit and Sprokholt mention the garden architect Hendrik Copijn as the designer of the park in Goudse plantaardigheden. In 1897, he created a plan for the park in the English landscape style. Characteristic of that style are the winding paths, ponds, and small wooden bridges. Van Elswijk mentions in Groen van toen the firm Groenewegen and Son as the designers. Their plan was well-received by the Gouda municipal authorities, and they were commissioned to construct the eastern part of the park in 1901. At the entrance of the park on the station side, two pillars were placed with lions on top, which came from the Kleiwegspoort that was demolished in 1843.
