The IJsselhaven lock, but more commonly called Havensluis, is located in Gouda, in the Dutch province of South Holland. The lock was built in 1615 as a sluice, because too much trouble was experienced by the silt supplied in the water of De Haven. As the name suggests, this lock is directly adjacent to the Hollandsche IJssel. Until the construction of this lock, the influence of ebb and flow was always present here in the city. The Dark Lock, 402 meters away, was already built in the 13th century, possibly even 11th century and is the oldest lock in Gouda. Another 382 metres further was the Amsterdam lock, or more commonly called the 'Amsterdams Verlaat'. This name is appropriate, because Gouda can be left there in the direction of Amsterdam.
