Gymnasium Camphusianum

The Gymnasium Camphusianum is the only categorical gymnasium in the Gorinchem region, in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a public school that had a total of 734 students in 2018. The Camphusianum was founded in 1883. In 1955, the original building on the Zusterstraat in Gorinchem was exchanged for a new building "op Sparta", outside the city canal. On that occasion, the name "Stedelijk Gymnasium" also changed to "Gymnasium Camphusianum", referring to the Gorcum poet/preacher Dirck Rafaëlszn Camphuysen. The Camphusianum is now part of the Board for Public United Education. Furthermore, in 2005 it was moved again to a building on the Vroedschapstraat. Drs. J.C. Ruitenbeek has been rector of the school since 2004. In 2006, the Camphusianum became a Universe School, a predicate for schools with special programs for science education. Since 2013, the Camphusianum has been a Giftedness Profile School. The national association BPS is a network of 26 schools for primary education and 44 schools for secondary education with expertise in the field of guidance of the more and highly gifted students. The Camphusianum works closely with Obs De Tweemaster in Gorinchem. The Tweemaster is also a Giftedness Profile School and is also part of OVO.
