Building Desire

Bouwlust is a monumental farm located in the village of Bergambacht at Bovenberg 54, in the Dutch province of South Holland. Bouwlust is a gentleman's farm, built halfway through the 17th century from yellow brick. In 1671, a kitchen bay was added on the east side with a classical gable. The broad front on the south side has an entrance door with a staircase. To the left of it are three windows that are lower than the two windows on the right side. Diagonally at the top left of the entrance door is another window in the gable. The 18th-century window grid was added during a restoration in the 20th century, and decorative anchors were also added at that time. Around 1941, Bouwlust was turned into a private museum. In 1964, the then-owner stopped the museum. Part of the then collection has been housed in the Catharina Gasthuis museum in Gouda, while another part of the collection was sold to third parties. In the early 21st century, the farm was restored. The former gentleman's farm has been recognized as a national monument. The former chauffeur's house is set up for bed-and-breakfast guests.
