Saint Gabriel

Saint Gabriel is a monastery with an accompanying church of the Passionist fathers located in Haastrecht, in the Dutch province of South Holland. The monastery is situated on the provincial road to Oudewater, approximately near Hekendorp on the other side of the Hollandse IJssel.

The monastery and the chapel were built in the years 1921 and 1922. The monastery was dedicated to Gabriele dell'Adolorata, who was canonized in 1920. The monastery served for the training of missionaries. It belongs to the congregation of the Passionists and has served as the administrative center of the congregation since 1967.
The Passionists take a fourth vow in addition to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, which is the remembrance of suffering. They derive their name from this, which refers to the suffering of Christ and to their mission to pay attention to the suffering of people.
Behind the monastery, on the banks of the Hollandse IJssel, there is a cemetery for the fathers and brothers. An iron gate provides access to the cemetery.

The historical monastery complex was inhabited by the Passionist fathers until the end of 2022, who have since collectively moved to another accommodation in Oudewater. The monastery is now empty and the entire monastery grounds are being transformed into a residential care facility.
