We are going to go back in time a bit further again. It is 1798 when hydraulic engineer Jan Blanken is finally allowed to start building two dry docks in Hellevoetsluis. Twelve years earlier he had already submitted the plan, but it was only executed when the French were in charge here. They were quite pleased that he used a new French invention: a floating ship's door to close off the dry dock.
