Sint Antoniusbank 42, Sint Antoniusbank: Monastery Sint Antoniusbank annex The Europe House
The Monastery of Sint Antoniusbank (now Sint Antoniusbank 42) is the third striking building in Sint Antoniusbank. Almost nothing is known about the history of this monastery before 1900. The first known inhabitants are the Visitandine sisters from France. They had bought this monastery because they thought they were being driven out of France. When this turned out not to be the case, they went back to France and rented the convent to the sisters of Heer, but these sisters also stayed there for a very short time; from October 1910 to January 1911.
Since September 1931 the monastery of St. Anthony's Bank was in the possession of the Messrs. Philosophen of the Society of African Missions. But on 16 December 1935 they left for England, because the building was in a bad condition in the 1930s. After that, the monastery was inhabited by the Brothers of the same congregation (ca. 20) who came from Blitterswijk to Sint Antoniusbank.
In May 1950, when the brothers moved from the monastery in Sint Antoniusbank to Cadier en Keer, the building was bought for f 40,000 by Mr. J. Rooding, who turned it into a hotel.
From 1964 to September 1966, the former monastery was a companion's home of the State Mines, where Yugoslav and later Moroccan guest workers were housed. In the autumn of 1967, the Europa House moved from Borgharen to this building.
