Sunday, September 17, 1944, the sky over the Netherlands suddenly filled with many aircraft. On this day and the day after, hundreds of large British gliders landed in the fields around Wolfheze, and thousands of British paratroopers also descended. It marked the beginning of what we now call 'The Battle of Arnhem,' an operation aimed at capturing the bridge in Arnhem from the German occupiers.
But what was a glider like? How big was it? How many troops and equipment could it hold? How was it controlled?
GLIDER COLLECTION WOLFHEZE shows what a glider from back then was like. Through large original pieces, tangible memories, photographs, and stories, GLIDER COLLECTION WOLFHEZE provides insight into the different types of gliders, the use of these gliders, and the scale of this operation.
