The Bijlmer is a residential area of Amsterdam originally characterised by high rise buildings in a beehive structure and with a lot of parkland around them. It was designed and build in the 1960's and '70's and was inspired by ideas by the famous Swiss architect Le Corbussier.
Although designed as a model reseidential area, it didn't work out and as a result the Bijmer got a very bad name for social and criminal problems. Starting in the 1990's most of the hige rise buildings have been demolished and replaced with more pleasant housing.
