The Bijlmermeer (or Bijlmer) is a residential neighborhood of Amsterdam. In the past, this area was characterized by high-rise buildings of ten stories in a distinctive hexagonal honeycomb structure and a lot of greenery, which emerged here in the years 1968-'69 and the 1970s. The design for the neighborhood was inspired by the functional city ideas of Swiss architect Le Corbusier. The Bijlmermeer was built as a 'model neighborhood,' the neighborhood for the modern person. This did not correspond with reality; the Bijlmermeer became nationally known within ten years of its construction due to social issues. Starting in the 1990s, a large-scale renewal operation was initiated, which has now progressed significantly. A large portion of the high-rise buildings has been demolished and replaced by smaller housing, including many homes in the purchase sector.
